Refinery Operations

  • Crude sourcing: IMPEX receives oil primarily from Kazakhstan’s prolific fields (Tengiz, Kashagan, Karachaganak), as well as select international blends for diversification.
  • Storage & handling: Large crude storage tanks ensure a steady flow into processing units. Advanced blending systems adjust crude properties for optimal refining.
  • Desalting process: Salt, water, and impurities are removed before crude enters the distillation column, protecting equipment from corrosion and fouling.

Primary Distillation

  • Vacuum distillation: Residual crude is processed under reduced pressure to extract heavy gas oils, feedstock for cracking units, and bitumen.
  • Atmospheric distillation: Crude is heated and separated into light fractions (LPG, naphtha, kerosene, diesel) and heavier residues.

Secondary Processing Units

To maximize product value, IMPEX employs conversion technologies

  • Catalytic cracking (FCC): Breaks heavy gas oils into lighter, high-octane gasoline.
  • Hydrocracking: Uses hydrogen under high pressure to produce ultra-clean diesel and jet fuel.
  • Coking units: Convert residual oils into petroleum coke, a solid carbon material used in industry.

Treatment & Blending Units

  • Hydrotreaters: Remove sulfur, nitrogen, and other contaminants from gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.
  • Reformers: Upgrade naphtha into high-octane components for gasoline and aromatics for petrochemicals.
  • Blending operations: Different fractions are blended with additives to create finished products (e.g., winter-grade diesel, aviation fuel).
